RIDE FOR LIGHT FOR THE WORLD!

What is Light for the World?

Light for the World fights against avoidable blindness and for the integration of visually impaired people in DR Congo, Rwanda and Tanzania. As a Belgian recognized NGO, we provide accessible eye care and inclusive education with the help of our local partners. 4.5 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa have a form of avoidable blindness. Only ten percent of children with disabilities attend school.

Light for the World has been fighting this injustice for more than 25 years. Together, we let them live a brighter life. We make eye care locally accessible to all. With our experts and local partners, we support eye clinics and units, provide quality infrastructure and train staff. The focus of our education programs is on inclusive education: visually impaired children attend classes together with sighted peers. This promotes their integration and breaks the stigma of their disability.

In October 2023, Dr Hubert, an ophtalmologist working in Belgium, flew to the DR Congo with Light for the World. This mission aimed at training staff at the Mwangaza eye clinic in Kolwezi, partner of the NGO, in the phacoemulsification technique. This will enable the clinic to treat many cases of cataract effectively.

History of the ride

Ten years ago, Benz RD launched the ‘Benz Ride’—a unique initiative to engage its customers. In 2013, Pat Benz took six of his customers on an unforgettable road biking experience in Amsterdam. The vibrant photos and videos from this trip were featured prominently at Benz RD’s booth during the following day’s ESCRS convention in Amsterdam.

Over the years, this event blossomed into a highlight of the ESCRS calendar. Each year, more than 35 of Benz RD customers looked forward to cycling together in the host city, culminating the day with drinks and dinner—a perfect opportunity for bonding and networking. For the final 4 years there was a waiting list.

However, with Benz RD’s acquisition by the BVI group at the end of 2023, the original ‘Benz Ride’ concluded. But the spirit of the event didn’t end with the sale. Over 100 participants from the past decade, passionate about the camaraderie and experiences they shared, weren’t ready to let this tradition fade away.

Seeing the opportunity to not only preserve but also enrich this tradition, two enthusiastic former participants, Christine Hubert and Yihad Menassa, decided to carry forward the legacy. They have reimagined the event as the ‘Light for the World’ ride, transforming it from a commercial venture into a philanthropic one, continuing to unite cycling enthusiasts and giving back to society in a meaningful way.
